Rachel’s Shower

Rachel's Shower

So there’s been a lot of activity for Snixie Photography this semester, but it’s been so busy around here that I haven’t had time to put any new pictures up! Now that I have a (semi!) free week, let’s see if we can get new pictures uploaded, shall we?

Waaaaay back in April, we had a grand party here at our school. Because Rachel is getting married, we threw her a bridal shower to celebrate. My friend Leah and I worked for a few months planning it, and in spite of a few hitches (a date change, the lateness of getting started), it was a beautiful party.

Rachel loves sunshine and the outdoors, and the minute we decided to put together a shower, I knew exactly what the inspiration would be. The super-talented Jose Villa had some gorgeous pictures last summer of the wedding of Tec and Chelsea. It ended up on tons of the blogs I read and I loved the colors and the outdoors and mostly the sheets. Rachel did also. So in spite of the fact that our budget was college-students-who-eat-ramen-noodles tiny, we tried our best.

So here’s some of my favorite pictures of the evening:

Ok, these weren’t from the evening. But Rachel’s shower was just after my birthday and I loved the flowers that my friend Mary bought me. I uploaded them with the shower pictures and just wanted to share. Daisies always remind me of You’ve Got Mail, when Tom Hanks comes over with flowers to try to win over Meg Ryan. It’s just so romantic!

The second picture of the flowers is of Rachel’s flowers she got from Colin that week, in her favorite color, yellow!

Well, let’s get back the shower, shall we?

Leah setting up the food right after Rachel arrived. We set up furniture in the woods to make a living room-like atmosphere. At a place where most parties happen in our cafeteria, it made for a really neat change.

Before Rachel got there, we had everyone take decorating icing and decorate “butt cookies”, made by cutting the points off of cookies cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Then we had Rachel come and judge which cookie was her favorite, after which everyone could eat theirs.

All the cookies laid out. Also note the newspaper and hair-tie wrapped present in the foreground. I told you we were poor college students!

We originally planned the party for March, when the forsythia was in bloom. I got various china (including 5 of those gorgeous blue mugs for 20 cents each!) at Goodwill and was so excited that the yellow would coordinate so well. When we re-scheduled for April, the forsythia was nowhere to be seen. But in its place were the dogwoods! In the end they worked out beautifully.

I was so busy rushing around I didn’t hardly get any pictures of the table. I hope you can see a few of my makeshift serving things, like the place perched on top of a mug to give some height! (Also note the cherry tomatoes on top of the cheese balls that Paulina, the girl in the picture below, placed there!)shower

Delightful women and delightful beauty!shower

One of the problems we ran into was that it was rediculously windy that day. Because we couldn’t find sheets that matched what we were going for, we bought pillowcases and cut them open to make long strips. But they were really light, and in the wind simply whipped around and wouldn’t hang still. Solution? Tie them at the bottom!
(Also in this picture, you can see the lights strung around the outside of our “room” with pictures of Colin and Rachel hung up with clothespins. Unfortunately that’s the closest I’ve got to a picture of that!)

Ana is so beautiful!

If only you could see what she was holding right then…

Apparently a hidden talent of mine is drawing strippers. I saw this game online but didn’t want to pay for it, so I used a piece of posterboard and a marker and my penchant for drawing larger versions of pictures and drew this stripper off of the pictures I saw online. It was a huge hit!

I wish this picture could do these justice. They were vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with homemade buttercream and brownie hearts on top. I saw the recipe in Martha Stewart Living’s February issue (which I ganked from the gym where I work so I could try the delicious cupcakes!) and knew that they would be perfect. They were, by far, one of the best parts of the shower!

Lastly, all (well, minus a few!) of the beautiful ladies who came out for the shower! We had such a lovely time and I am so privileged to know all of them! I hope we get to do it again someday!Shower
